I agree with you I think. The organization seemed too be different when my parents accepted the "truth" I think it changed with the Elder arrangement. I always felt I would never have accepted the "truth" as they did at the time but now it disgusts me.

then and now 40 years later
by bigmac ini want to put "pen to paper" so to speak, comparing what i left behind as a young jw man 40 years ago, with what ive been reading on this site.. i cant include everything in 1 post, so please put up with me while i compile my recollections.. this is not a hate-filled diatribe, but hopefully a worthwhile comparison.
i grew up as a jw, being baptised at 14, left school at 15, started pioneering at 17.. the congregation i spent 5 years in, 1966-71, brings back many fond memories, the most important being the love we all shared for each other.. the emphasis was on helping one another; circuit servant visits were eagerly looked forward to, assemblies a treat.. very occasionally, someone might slip up & sin.
usually it involved sex, most times the person was put on probation ( ever heard that word?).

Pissing On JWs That Are Geuninely Searching Here
by minimus ini just want to say something about witnesses who come here just to try to rebel rouse as opposed to jws that come here and are "searching" or are "active" members in the organization but are reading info on this site.. there's no reason to "beat down" witnesses just because they still go to meetings and we don't.
i've seen some insulting words against present elders and it's unnecessary and judgmental, in my honest opinion.
some jws like to spar with us on this board and it's a losing effort for them in reality.. who knows when or what will make someone actually leave the tentacles of the organization.

"What can they be afraid of by stepping down and showing they no longer support a corrupt system. You won't lose friends or family by no longer serving as an elder."
I think that's a good point.

Billy the Ex-Bethelite
Yes I have thought of going, maybe to study Philosophy or Theology.
St. George,
I think he has a few boxes of condoms. He has a girlfriend but he was commenting how good the young ladies look. (How I was denied such pleasures.) He hopes to study medicine, and is doing a science degree at the moment.
Lozhasleft,
It really irritated me the dishonesty. I admit the final decision rests with an individual. However I know of people who did further education and it was frowned on while they did it only later to go to Bethel as the society needed their skills and they have served as Elders and have good income now.

Sorry! lol.
I took my son to University last weekend and my daughter started her Phd this week.
Some years ago I had a discussion with a sister about the reasons i was ceasing to attend the Hall and we got on to education. She told me how she could have done better and gone into further education. In fact her daughter who is really bright went and dropped out recently. I think due to pressure from the congregation.
Of course there are temptations at university which my son will endeavor to resist. (He took his bible. He may read it.)
When I had the elders round after writing to the society and recieving no reply. I brought up the education subject and they told me it was my own fault and my parents. The Society had always advocated education. Totally different from the discussion with the elders daughter I had had some weeks earlier.
I worry about my kids like any parent but I'm glad they have the opportunities they have.

Have you ever had " a moment of clarity"?
by elderelite inthese moments are something that not eveyone has experianced, but if you have they are with you every day.
a true moment of clarity is not something you live once.
you live it every time you think of it.

Yes. When my brother died I realised he had experienced trouble with the supernatural as he had always claimed and I had dismissed.

why bother to pray?
by arimatthewdavies inalmost everyone has seen someone pray over the food at the dinner table, you know bless this food to our bodies and our bodies to your service, but tell the truth when was the last time god answered you?
ah like never?
so still we go on with the ritual of praying because some how its what god expects right?

I liked Grand Funk's Heartbreaker but my favourite song is Everybody's changing by Keane.
